Golden Resilience Initiative

Strengthening Resilience Through Healthy Ageing, Preparedness, and Community Empowerment

As Caribbean populations age and climate-related hazards become more frequent and severe, communities face a growing challenge: ensuring that older adults are not only protected during disasters but are empowered to prepare for, adapt to, and recover from them.

The Golden Resilience Initiative (GRI) is a resilience education and capacity-building framework that equips older adults, caregivers, organizations, and communities with the knowledge, skills, and support needed to reduce disaster risk and strengthen resilience.

By combining disaster preparedness, healthy ageing, community engagement, and resilience education, GRI helps transform older adults from perceived recipients of assistance into active participants in building safer and more resilient communities.

The Challenge

Older adults are among those most affected by disasters and climate-related hazards. Factors such as chronic health conditions, mobility limitations, social isolation, medication dependence, and limited access to information can significantly increase disaster risk.

Across the Caribbean, ageing populations are growing while climate change is intensifying hazards such as hurricanes, flooding, drought, extreme heat, and public health emergencies.

Many preparedness programs are designed for the general population and do not adequately address the unique needs, strengths, and lived experiences of older adults.

Communities need practical approaches that promote preparedness, independence, dignity, and inclusion while recognizing the valuable knowledge and contributions older adults bring to resilience.

Why It Matters

Resilience is strongest when every member of the community can prepare for, respond to, and recover from adversity.

Supporting older adults is not simply a humanitarian responsibility—it is an investment in stronger families, healthier communities, and more resilient societies.

Older adults possess decades of experience, local knowledge, and community leadership that can strengthen resilience planning when their voices are included.

Preparing older adults today reduces future disaster impacts, improves health outcomes, strengthens community support networks, and enhances overall adaptive capacity.

The GRI Solution

The Golden Resilience Initiative provides an integrated framework that combines disaster preparedness, resilience education, healthy ageing, and community engagement into a practical program that organizations can adapt to local needs.

Rather than focusing only on emergency response, GRI promotes lifelong preparedness by strengthening knowledge, confidence, self-reliance, and social connectedness before disasters occur.

The framework is designed to support organizations working with older adults while encouraging collaboration among families, caregivers, healthcare providers, emergency managers, community organizations, and policymakers.
